First Redfish, Double-Ups and a 30-Inch Personal Best

<p>Gavin, Colton, Addy, and Andrew joined me for two days on the water in Crystal River, and on the way out that first morning they told me they had never caught redfish before.</p><p>Challenge accepted.</p><p>Day one did not disappoint.</p><p>We were fishing live pinfish tight to the mangroves, and just about every place we stopped produced fish. The boys were catching redfish left and right, with several double hookups throughout the day.</p><p>At one point we had another double-up right beside the boat when several redfish followed one of the hooked fish in. Things got a little crazy for a few minutes, but that's the kind of chaos you don't mind having on a fishing charter.</p><p>We caught several quality reds in the 24- to 25-inch range along with plenty of other fish mixed in. By the end of the day, I'd estimate we had caught around 20 redfish as we moved from one location to another.</p><p>The boys were enthusiastic from beginning to end. For four guys who started the morning having never caught a redfish, they certainly made up for lost time.</p><p>Mother Nature did make things interesting. Summer storms moved through the area and things got a little hairy a couple of times, so we had to pull away and spend some time staying ahead of the weather. Once the storms passed and it was safe to get back after them, we headed right back out and started catching fish again.</p><p>Day two gave us an opportunity to show them another side of the Nature Coast.</p><p>The water had cleared up and the sun was shining, so we headed out to do some scalloping. It was their first time scalloping as well, and they picked it up quickly. They found plenty of scallops while snorkeling and got a chance to see what makes the waters around Crystal River so unique.</p><p>After we finished scalloping, we decided to put the fishing rods back to work.</p><p>The redfish bite wasn't nearly as strong as it had been the previous day, but sometimes one fish can make the entire afternoon.</p><p>Colton hooked into a good redfish and, after a nice fight, brought a beautiful 30-inch red to the boat — a new personal best and a great way to put an exclamation point on their two-day trip.</p><p>After two days of fishing, scalloping and summer heat, we finished things off with a trip to the springs so everyone could cool down and enjoy one more part of the Crystal River experience.</p><p>Between catching their first redfish, multiple double-ups, roughly 20 reds on the first day, scalloping for the first time, Colton's 30-inch personal best and finishing at the springs, these guys got a pretty good introduction to what a couple of days on the Nature Coast can offer.</p><p>I even picked up a couple of new subscribers to the podcast and YouTube channel along the way!</p><p>Thanks again, Gavin, Colton, Eddie and Andrew. From Fast Double-Ups to Hard-Earned Reds

Vince and Angel joined me for two days of fishing out of Crystal River, and their trip turned out to be a great example of just how much conditions can change from one day to the next.

Day one started with Angel telling me she had never caught a redfish before.

Challenge accepted.

At our first stop, we put a live pinfish up near the mangroves, and within about 30 seconds Angel was hooked into her first-ever redfish. After a good fight, she brought a nice 22-inch red to the boat. It didn't take long for her to understand why so many people enjoy catching these fish.

The bite slowed almost as quickly as it started, so after giving the area about 10 minutes, I decided it was time to move and find some more active fish.

At the next island, Vince and Angel both cast their pinfish toward the mangroves, and almost immediately we had a double hookup. Vince brought a solid 22-inch redfish to the boat while Angel topped her first fish with a beautiful 26-inch red.

After some pictures, we put the baits back out, and it happened again — another double hookup.

Vince kept his fish under control while Angel fought the larger fish, eventually bringing another beautiful redfish of around 25 inches to the boat. We were able to get some great pictures of the two of them doubled up, and by that point they were pretty happy with what they had accomplished.

The fishing had been fast. Between the run out, getting bait and actually fishing, we hadn't been at it very long and probably hadn't used more than five pinfish. Sometimes when the fish are ready to eat, there's no reason to make things complicated.

We originally planned to try some scalloping afterward, but the water was too dirty to make it worthwhile. Instead, we headed over to the springs, where Vince and Angel were able to cool off and enjoy another part of what makes Crystal River and the Nature Coast such a special place.

Day two was a completely different kind of fishing day.

We were dealing with an extremely high tide, there wasn't much mullet activity, and the redfish bite had shut down considerably from the day before. On top of that, storms and lightning kept moving through the area.

We spent a good portion of the day running and gunning — heading south, then north, and eventually back south again — trying to stay ahead of the weather while continuing to look for active fish.

Those are the days when attitude makes a big difference, and Vince and Angel stayed with it. They kept making casts and stayed positive even though Mother Nature wasn't making things easy for us.

Their persistence eventually paid off.

We found a solid 25-inch redfish along with another 19-inch red to add to the fish they were taking home.

Over two days, Vince and Angel got to experience both sides of Crystal River redfishing. The first morning gave us quick bites, quality fish and multiple double hookups. The following day made us work for every opportunity while dealing with high water and summer thunderstorms.

That's fishing. Conditions can change overnight, and sometimes the best thing you can do is keep moving, keep adjusting and make the most of the opportunities you're given.

A Great Day Chasing Redfish on the Nature Coast

Tony and John joined me for a half-day redfish trip out of Crystal River, and the action started almost immediately with a double hookup on their first casts. That set the tone for the morning, with several more double-ups as we worked live pinfish tight to the mangroves on medium-light spinning tackle.

We started around the islands and then followed the outgoing tide into the backcountry creeks. Nearly every stop produced redfish, including several fish we caught and released without ever stopping for pictures. The highlight was a beautiful 30-inch redfish.

Full-Day Crystal River Adventure with Redfish and Scallops

Jay and Perry joined me for a full day on the water in Crystal River, spending the morning fishing and the afternoon scalloping. We didn't have to wait long to get started. At our first stop, we had our first fish in the boat within about 15 minutes.

While we were fishing, a school of jacks came pushing through the area. Perry grabbed a rod with a swimbait, made a cast, and was hooked up almost immediately. That added a little excitement before we moved on to another island looking for redfish.

The next move paid off. We found a good school of redfish holding tight underneath the mangroves. Jay and Perry doubled up several times as we worked the fish, making for a pretty steady morning of action.

As the afternoon wore on and the Florida summer heat settled in, it was time to change gears. We traded the fishing rods for masks and snorkels and jumped into the cooler Gulf water to look for scallops. Within about an hour, we had enough to go along with the morning's catch for a fresh fish and scallop dinner.

That's one of the things I enjoy about summer on the Nature Coast. You can spend the morning chasing redfish around the mangroves and then cool off in the afternoon while searching for scallops. Jay and Perry got to experience a little bit of both and finished the day with plenty of fresh seafood for dinner.

Jesse and Camden joined me for a morning of redfish fishing in Crystal River. We left the dock around 7 a.m., and it was apparently a little early for Camden. On the ride out, I could see him trying his best to stay awake, leaning over and then waking himself back up as we ran.

That changed pretty quickly once we started fishing.

We were using live pinfish on an outgoing tide when Camden hooked into his first-ever redfish, a nice 20-inch fish. He definitely woke up after that one. It didn't take long before he followed it up with a 23-inch redfish and then topped off his morning with a beautiful 26-inch fish.

Watching a young angler go from fighting sleep on the boat ride to catching his first redfish—and then two more increasingly bigger fish—is one of the things that makes these trips fun for me.

The outgoing tide and live pinfish produced well, and Jesse and Camden were back at the dock by noon after a great summer morning on the water in Crystal River.

Early Morning Incoming Tides Continue to Produce Quality Redfish

The summer redfish bite continues to improve throughout Crystal River as early morning incoming tides provide the most consistent action. Clear water, healthy grass flats, and active baitfish combined to keep redfish feeding during the cooler hours before the afternoon heat.

Today's fish were found along shallow grass flats and nearby potholes where moving water concentrated bait. Live pinfish produced the best action, resulting in several quality redfish, including a few oversized fish that were released to fight another day.

Fishing report for December 8th 2025

Had George and Maddy on board today, never fished in saltwater before and had not fished a whole lot. With a couple of quick lessons both of them were catching a good number of fish today. They only took enough home they would eat, never had Trout or Mackerel before . We were throwing popping corks with soft plastics underneath and they had a ball today. Even got a nice Sea bass to add to the mix as well.

First-Time Saltwater Anglers Crushing the Bite Today

We wrapped up another Fishing Adventures Florida episodes last week. Capt. Sergio, Capt. Ron and myself went out of crystal river to see how many species we could catch in a 4 hour time frame. We left the dock around 10:00 am and returned around 2:30pm.  We were able to catch Grouper, Sheepshead, Mangrove Snapper, Key West Grunts, Speckled Trout and Redfish. We fish a -0.5 low tide to a 2.0 high tide, with a variety of baits from soft plastics, shrimp, pinfish and cut baits. we had a great time just catching fish all day. The episode will aire sometime in February 2026 on numerous streaming platforms like Waypoint TV, Carbon TV, Youtube, Gen 7, and Angling TV. Where the Reds Are Biting and the Grouper Are Hungry 

It’s summertime in Crystal River, and the fishing is heating up right along with the weather. The inshore bite has been steady, especially in the early morning hours when temperatures are a little more forgiving. Redfish are cruising the mangrove lines and oyster bars—cut bait and live shrimp have been the top producers. Slot-size fish are being caught regularly, with a few upper-slot bulls putting anglers to the test.



What a great day we had out on the water with Terry VanderWert and the crew here at Crystal River, Florida! This time of year is prime for inshore fishing, with the warming waters bringing the Spotted Seatrout and Redfish (Red Drum) closer to the shoreline. The weather was on our side too - a bit of clearing in the afternoon made for comfortable conditions as we set out from the 614 NW US-19 marina.

We got set up with our fly rods and light tackle gear, ready to work the flats and channels for some quality inshore action. It didn't take long before the fish started to cooperate - Terry was the first to hook up, getting a nice Spotted Seatrout to come up and crush his fly. The fight was on, and he handled that fish like a pro, keeping steady pressure until we had it safely in the boat. That got the blood pumping, and we stayed on the hunt, constantly scanning the water for any signs of baitfish and predators. 

Before long, someone spotted a small school of Redfish cruising a shallow flat, and we all made precise casts to try and draw a strike. Sure enough, one of those big, copper-colored brutes smashed a topwater lure, and it was pandemonium as the fish made multiple strong runs. Everyone was hooting and hollering, keeping the energy high as we fought that Redfish to the boat. With a few high-fives and some quick photos, we revived the fish and watched it swim off strong. That's the kind of action that makes these inshore trips so much fun - the visual of seeing those tailing fish, the electricity of the strike, and the sheer power these fish possess.

<div>Cool water equals a great sea trout bite.The past cold front cooled the water down from 74 to 55 a big swing in water temps. It took a day for the fish to acclimate and start feeding. The bite was slow but steady all through the day&nbsp; What worked for us is working jigs tipped with shrimp on a slow crawl along the bottom and it produced a good number of fish. We let go a few over 20 inches as we already had one over the slot. We were able to pull a couple of black drum out from the spot as well. Great day of fishing in cooler temps.</div>

<div>Reds are starting their winter pattern cruising the shallows looking for those warmer waters on the south end of the mangroves. W<span style="font-size: 1em;">e've been sightcasting for them with shrimp and cut ladyfish and very productive throughout most of the day, mainly on the outgoing tides.</span></div>

Left the redfish biting, Vaughn joined me on a three day expedition and we caught a ton of fish for all three days. left at first light and was back at the dock by 11 with numerous fish caught and released.

The sheepshead are here. We have been having great luck on inshore rocks fishing off the coast of Crystal River, FL. The bite has been steady and when they stop biting we go inside the mangroves to fish for redfish and trout. Snook season starts on March 1st. Those line-sides are unbelievable fighters. Summer time fun

Fishing report for the heat.
This year's scallop harvest is a little tougher than last, but we have been able to stack some up in the coolers. When looking for them the best advise is to slow down while hunting. Many scallops are sticking closer to the sand or mud bottoms and deeper in the grass due to warmer temps. Always swim against the current to be able to see into the sea grass. Interesting fact, you may feel when grabbing one that the water is warmer inside their shell while they are feeding.
Fishing has been good still. Redfish and Snook are sticking to moving water when the tide is low and hightailing it to the shade when tide is high. Moving water is oxygenated water for the fish when the temps are high. Use live bait when possible or use fresh lady fish chunks and wait it out for a good bite. The windy side of mangroves will produce better numbers due to the wave action stirring and cooling the water.
Trout have been in deeper waters, with good numbers in a school, you just have to weed thru the small ones for limit, but at least they are biting. Use shrimp on a jig and bounce the bottoms, once you get a bite fish that area well.
