Crystal River Fishing Reports

Vince and Angel joined me for two days of fishing out of Crystal River, and their trip turned out to be a great example of just how much conditions can change from one day to the next. Day one started with Angel telling me she had never caught a redfish before. Challenge accepted. At our first stop, we put a live pinfish up near the mangroves, and within about 30 seconds Angel was hooked into her first-ever redfish. After a good fight, she brought a nice 22-inch red to the boat. It didn't take long for her to understand why so many people enjoy catching these fish. The bite slowed almost as quickly as it started, so after giving the area about 10 minutes, I decided it was time to move and find some more active fish. At the next island, Vince and Angel both cast their pinfish toward the mangroves, and almost immediately we had a double hookup. Vince brought a solid 22-inch redfish to the boat while Angel topped her first fish with a beautiful 26-inch red. After some pictures, we put the baits back out, and it happened again — another double hookup. Vince kept his fish under control while Angel fought the larger fish, eventually bringing another beautiful redfish of around 25 inches to the boat. We were able to get some great pictures of the two of them doubled up, and by that point they were pretty happy with what they had accomplished. The fishing had been fast. Between the run out, getting bait and actually fishing, we hadn't been at it very long and probably hadn't used more than five pinfish. Sometimes when the fish are ready to eat, there's no reason to make things complicated. We originally planned to try some scalloping afterward, but the water was too dirty to make it worthwhile. Instead, we headed over to the springs, where Vince and Angel were able to cool off and enjoy another part of what makes Crystal River and the Nature Coast such a special place. Day two was a completely different kind of fishing day. We were dealing with an extremely high tide, there wasn't much mullet activity, and the redfish bite had shut down considerably from the day before. On top of that, storms and lightning kept moving through the area. We spent a good portion of the day running and gunning — heading south, then north, and eventually back south again — trying to stay ahead of the weather while continuing to look for active fish. Those are the days when attitude makes a big difference, and Vince and Angel stayed with it. They kept making casts and stayed positive even though Mother Nature wasn't making things easy for us. Their persistence eventually paid off. We found a solid 25-inch redfish along with another 19-inch red to add to the fish they were taking home. Over two days, Vince and Angel got to experience both sides of Crystal River redfishing. The first morning gave us quick bites, quality fish and multiple double hookups. The following day made us work for every opportunity while dealing with high water and summer thunderstorms. That's fishing. Tony and John joined me for a half-day redfish trip out of Crystal River, and the action started almost immediately with a double hookup on their first casts. That set the tone for the morning, with several more double-ups as we worked live pinfish tight to the mangroves on medium-light spinning tackle. We started around the islands and then followed the outgoing tide into the backcountry creeks. Nearly every stop produced redfish, including several fish we caught and released without ever stopping for pictures. The highlight was a beautiful 30-inch redfish. Jay and Perry joined me for a full day on the water in Crystal River, spending the morning fishing and the afternoon scalloping. We didn't have to wait long to get started. At our first stop, we had our first fish in the boat within about 15 minutes. While we were fishing, a school of jacks came pushing through the area. Perry grabbed a rod with a swimbait, made a cast, and was hooked up almost immediately. That added a little excitement before we moved on to another island looking for redfish. The next move paid off. We found a good school of redfish holding tight underneath the mangroves. Jay and Perry doubled up several times as we worked the fish, making for a pretty steady morning of action. As the afternoon wore on and the Florida summer heat settled in, it was time to change gears. We traded the fishing rods for masks and snorkels and jumped into the cooler Gulf water to look for scallops. Within about an hour, we had enough to go along with the morning's catch for a fresh fish and scallop dinner. That's one of the things I enjoy about summer on the Nature Coast. You can spend the morning chasing redfish around the mangroves and then cool off in the afternoon while searching for scallops. Jay and Perry got to experience a little bit of both and finished the day with plenty of fresh seafood for dinner.

Jesse and Camden joined me for a morning of redfish fishing in Crystal River. We left the dock around 7 a.m., and it was apparently a little early for Camden. On the ride out, I could see him trying his best to stay awake, leaning over and then waking himself back up as we ran. That changed pretty quickly once we started fishing. We were using live pinfish on an outgoing tide when Camden hooked into his first-ever redfish, a nice 20-inch fish. He definitely woke up after that one. It didn't take long before he followed it up with a 23-inch redfish and then topped off his morning with a beautiful 26-inch fish. Watching a young angler go from fighting sleep on the boat ride to catching his first redfish—and then two more increasingly bigger fish—is one of the things that makes these trips fun for me. The outgoing tide and live pinfish produced well, and Jesse and Camden were back at the dock by noon after a great summer morning on the water in Crystal River. The cold front has finally settled in, and the fish are sliding into their winter patterns. Action has been steady, with plenty of bites in the wintering holes around the river mouths. Had George and Maddy on board today, never fished in saltwater before and had not fished a whole lot. With a couple of quick lessons both of them were catching a good number of fish today. They only took enough home they would eat, never had Trout or Mackerel before . We were throwing popping corks with soft plastics underneath and they had a ball today. Even got a nice Sea bass to add to the mix as well.

We wrapped up another Fishing Adventures Florida episodes last week. Capt. Sergio, Capt. Ron and myself went out of crystal river to see how many species we could catch in a 4 hour time frame. We left the dock around 10:00 am and returned around 2:30pm. We were able to catch Grouper, Sheepshead, Mangrove Snapper, Key West Grunts, Speckled Trout and Redfish. We fish a -0.5 low tide to a 2.0 high tide, with a variety of baits from soft plastics, shrimp, pinfish and cut baits. we had a great time just catching fish all day.
