Fishing Techniques & Hotspots

On this trip, we'll be using a mix of live bait and artificial lures, depending on what's biting. Captain Mike's boat is decked out with top-of-the-line gear, including light tackle setups perfect for inshore fishing. He'll show you how to work a popping cork for trout, the right retrieve for a topwater lure, and how to present a live shrimp to a wary redfish. And if the bite's on fire, we might even run out to some nearshore reefs to tangle with some hard-pulling snapper.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Snook: These hard-fighting bruisers are the crown jewel of inshore fishing. They love to hang around structure, so we'll be targeting mangrove shorelines and dock pilings. Snook put up an incredible fight, often jumping clear out of the water. They're most active in the warmer months, making them a perfect summer target.

Redfish: Also known as red drum, these copper-colored beauties are a favorite among Crystal River anglers. We'll often spot them tailing in shallow water, their dorsal fins sticking up as they root for crabs. Fall is prime time for big bull reds, but we catch them year-round. They're not just fun to catch - they make for some mighty fine eating too.

Sea Trout: The spotted seatrout is a staple of inshore fishing in Florida. We'll find them over grass flats, often in schools. They're suckers for a well-presented artificial lure, making them great for anglers who want to work on their casting skills. Spring and fall are peak seasons, but we catch them all year.

Grey Snapper: Also called mangrove snapper, these tasty fish are found around structure in slightly deeper water. They're known for their crafty nature and light bite, so finesse is key. Late summer is prime time, but we can target them most of the year. They might not be the biggest, but they're one of the best-eating fish in these waters.

Largemouth Bass: Yep, you read that right. Crystal River's unique blend of fresh and saltwater means we can target these freshwater favorites too. We'll find them in the river's upper reaches, around lily pads and fallen timber. Spring is the best time to catch big bass, but they're active year-round.

Time to Book Your Spot

Gents Fishing Wisdom

quotes

We did not catch many fish, but they call it "fishing" not "fish catching". Didn't matter much though, we had a great day. Nice boat, REALLY nice boat! and Mike was careful to keep us in spots with good promise. He is a real gentleman, great to chat with him. And these Wisconsin boys learned a lot about salt water fishing. Sorry, no picts yet, too tuckered out to unload the camera.

Grey Snapper

Grey snapper, or mangrove snapper, are a fun inshore target averaging 1-3 pounds. You'll find them around structure like rocks, reefs, and - you guessed it - mangroves. They prefer depths of 10-100 feet. These fish are opportunistic feeders, so they'll hit a variety of baits. Summer and fall are prime seasons when they school up. Anglers enjoy targeting them for their tasty white meat and the challenge of getting them to bite. They can be picky eaters, so downsizing your tackle and using light fluorocarbon leader helps. Try a live shrimp on a small hook, letting it sink naturally near structure. When you feel a tap, give it a second before setting the hook - snappers often nibble before committing. Once hooked, they put up a scrappy fight on light tackle.

Grey Snapper

Largemouth Bass

Largemouth bass are a popular target in Crystal River, typically ranging from 2-5 pounds but can grow much larger. You'll find them in shallow, weedy areas near structure like docks or fallen trees. They're aggressive predators, known for explosive strikes and acrobatic fights. Spring and fall are prime seasons when bass move shallow to spawn or feed. Anglers love targeting them for the excitement and challenge. To up your odds, try working a plastic worm slowly along the bottom near cover. When a bass picks it up, you'll feel a slight "tick" on the line - that's when you set the hook hard. These fish put up a great fight and make for some tasty eating too if you decide to keep one for dinner.

Largemouth Bass

Redfish

Redfish are a favorite target in Crystal River, usually 18-27 inches but can reach over 40 inches. You'll find them tailing in shallow flats or cruising near oyster bars and mangroves. They love to root around bottom structure for crabs and shrimp. Fall is prime time as they school up for spawning. Anglers go crazy for their powerful runs and copper-colored scales with that distinctive black spot near the tail. To hook one, try working a gold spoon or scented soft plastic slowly along the bottom on a shallow flat. When you see a tail or wake, make a quiet cast ahead of the fish. Once hooked, hang on - redfish are known for long, powerful runs that'll test your drag. Just remember to check regulations, as slot limits apply to protect the breeding stock.

Redfish

Sea Trout

Sea trout, or speckled trout, are a staple inshore species here. Most run 14-20 inches but can reach 30 inches. You'll find them over grass flats and around oyster bars in 2-6 feet of water. They're ambush predators, so look for them along edges and drop-offs. Spring and fall are prime seasons as they move with bait schools. Anglers love targeting them for their aggressive strikes and good table fare. To catch one, try working a soft plastic jig or topwater plug over grass flats early morning or late evening. When you see a boil or feel a strike, set the hook fast - trout have soft mouths. Once hooked, they'll often make several short runs and head shakes. Keep your rod tip up to avoid losing them at the boat.

Sea Trout

Snook

Snook are an inshore favorite here in Crystal River, typically 24-28 inches but can reach over 40 inches. You'll find them around mangroves, docks, and other structure in the estuaries and backwaters. They're ambush predators, so look for points and dropoffs where they wait to attack bait. Spring and fall are prime seasons as water temperatures change. Anglers love snook for their hard-hitting strikes and drag-screaming runs. To fool one, try working a soft plastic jerk bait or live bait like a pinfish around structure during moving tides. When you feel the thump, reel down and set the hook hard - snook have tough mouths. Be ready for some acrobatics once you hook up! Just remember, snook are catch-and-release only much of the year to protect the population.
